in the most simple terms, a system is multiple 'people' living in one body, these people are called alters.
To go more in depth: in a trauma based system, a system forms when someone goes through repeated childhood trauma, and copes throuugh dissociation. That dissociation causes amnesia barriers between different parts of the childs personality, leading to them not forming one full identity and instead having multiple parts, which are commonly called alters or headmates. Some people believe that the only way to become plural is through trauma, others believe there are non-disordered and/or spiritual types of plurality. What you believe is completey your own choice.
